Sheep Weight Calculator Without a Scale
Estimate sheep weight using tape measurements of the heart girth and body length.
How this calculator works
By measuring the volume of the sheep's core body cylinder (heart girth and length), we can apply a standard livestock density constant to estimate weight.
Formula used
Weight (lb) = (Heart Girth in inches × Heart Girth × Body Length) ÷ 300
Example calculation
A sheep with a 35-inch girth and 30-inch length: (35 × 35 × 30) ÷ 300 = 122.5 lbs.
What to do with this result
Use this estimate to calculate drug dosages (always err on the side of caution), monitor growth, or prepare for transport.

One-off calculations are useful for quick checks, but farm decisions are better when records stay connected. HerdDeck Shepherd connects sheep records, weights, treatments, feed stock, costs and reports in one workflow.

You use a measuring tape to measure the heart girth (around the chest just behind the front legs) and the body length (from the point of the shoulder to the pin bone).
It provides a rough estimate within 5-10%. Accuracy varies by breed, wool length, and stomach fill.
Yes, select the metric option. The calculator automatically converts the math.
Yes. Pull the tape snug against the skin to avoid overestimating weight due to thick fleece.
It is better than guessing visually, but always read medication labels carefully. Underdosing dewormers can lead to resistance.
